Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. More children die each year from brain tumours than any other childhood cancer.

Did you know that…

 

  • Brain tumours are the leading cause of solid cancer death in children under the age of 20, now surpassing acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
  • Embryonal tumours are the most common brain tumour among 0 – 4-year-olds.
  • The most common brain tumour among children 5-14 is pilocytic astrocytoma.
  • Brain tumours in children are different from those in adults and are often treated differently. Although as many as 60% of children with brain tumours will survive, they are often left with long-term side effects.
